Giving help and support in the community is the cornerstone
of FiSH and it has been doing this for 50 years. It is a voluntary community care scheme offering help with practical
tasks, support and friendship to anyone in need in Barnes, Mortlake and East
Sheen.
We welcome requests for help and urgently seek new volunteers to help us carry out the requests made for our service.
We provide:
- FiSHhelpline: 020 8876 3414. This helpline is manned on weekdays from 9.00 to 12 noon. The duty team match the request with a suitable volunteer as quickly as possible.
- Door to door help, with weekly shopping trips and outings to local attractive locations in our fully accessible minibuses, which we run in partnership with Richmond & Kingston Accessible Transport. This is invaluable to housebound and frail people. We also offer transport door to door for hospital and GP visits among many other requests.
- Befriending services face to face or over the phone.
- Our minibuses which are available for hire to local groups.
- FiSH busline: 020 8876 3765
- There are also many daily activities held at the Barnes Green Centre, organised by FiSH and Age UK Richmond who run the Centre on a daily basis.
- FiSH 'n' Chats is our social listening project where trained volunteers listen to people who call in for a confidential chat on a one-to-one basis.
FiSH started in Mortlake and East Sheen through the local
churches in the early 1960's. Barnes FiSH followed a year later. In 2000 the
two schemes amalgamated to make a bigger stronger organisation, with a salaried
co-ordinator and an office base. As a voluntary community care scheme it has
thrived and with your help will continue to go from strength to strength.
Since our simple beginning we now have seven hundred clients and two hundred
volunteers.
The modern acronym stands for:
- Friendship
- independence
- Support
- Help
Does FiSH really work?
This is the question FiSH is being challenged to answer more and more as our funders ask us to demonstrate that we are offering excellent value in return for their money. To answer this fifty six FiSH users kindly agreed to be interviewed during October and November 2010 using a survey questionnaire we called FiSH NET (FiSH Neighbourhood-care Evaluation Tool). Click this link FiSH NET to read highlights of the survey.
The FiSH offices are in the Barnes Green Centre beside Barnes pond. Fish' n' Chats,
our social outreach programme, is in the Sheen Lane Centre (next to the library)
on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (but not the first Friday in the month)
10.30am - 12.30pm. You will also find a library, a Citizen's Advice Bureau
and the GP surgeries within the Sheen Lane Centre. The area covered by FiSH
is shown in the map below.
